Open Letter to Sybrina Fulton:

Dear Ms.Fulton,

Before I say what needs to be said, let me first express my condolences for the loss of your son. It was a tragedy, and no parent should ever have to bury their child. My sympathies to you and your family.

With all due respect, Ms. Fulton, I am a Christian. I am not one of those “Sunday morning” varieties, who show up and get their ticket punched for a good attendance award. It is something that I strive to live by every hour of every day, however difficult it may be at times. I do not always succeed, but I give every effort to try and live by the dictates of the name.

You are the one who chose to publicly bring God and your religion into this situation regarding your son. To my knowledge, no one coerced you into stating your religious position. So, since you brought it up, I am going to examine your claim to the name.
One of the 10 commandments is “thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain”. While many, many people are firmly convinced that this statement means that you shouldn’t say things like “God dammit”, in fact, that is not at all what this means.

When you “took the Lord’s name” (Christ), you were, for lack of a better term, identifying yourself by the attributes of Christ. It is rather like marrying a man and accepting his family name as yours, forever identifying yourself as part of his family.
“Taking the Lord’s name in vain” means to accept the identity of the Lord uselessly, or for other reasons than the original intent. It means to accept the name without accepting the responsibility and care for it that it deserves. When one “takes the Lord’s name” it also means to take on that same character that the name (nature, character, identification) implies.

In all honesty, I have yet to see you display any of the characteristics of the Lord you claim as your own. The fruit of the spirit of Christ is listed quite clearly in Galatians 5:22-23 (love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control).

Also, the hallmark of Christ was His ability to FORGIVE, even when others did not deserve (or ask for) forgiveness. Your behavior during this entire ordeal has not evidenced to me, or to other Christians who are such rather than just by name only, much if any “fruit” of the spirit of God. You have not exhibited forgiveness at all, and seem rather quietly to be hell-bent on getting revenge, cloaked in the altruistic word “justice”, and demanding that George Zimmerman pay for the death of your son, and truth be damned as to whether or not he intended to kill your son. You have knowingly and willfully engaged in bearing false witness against your neighbor, as well as lying about your son’s behavior in order to paint a false picture of him to the public.

Other attributes of Christians are found in II Peter 1:5-7 (faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; [6] and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; [7] and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.)

The Beatitudes listed in Matthew 5:3-10, are also indicative of the character, attitude and behavior of those who would call themselves Christians: ("Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.")

As one who professes the name of Christ, just because you are in the throes of grief over the loss of your son, you do not have the luxury of laying down your Christian principles and taking them up again at a more convenient time. It is in the heat of the battle that our hearts are revealed, not when things are quiet and we have luxury of plenty of time and no stress on us to try and behave according to the standards set out for us.

At this time I would also like to present to you a list of those “sins” which we, as Christians are to avoid like the plague: Galatian’s 5:19-21 lists these BEFORE the fruits of the spirit that we expected to manifest if/when God is truly the Lord of our life: {(19)The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; (20) idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions ;(21) and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.}

While I am certainly not informed or knowing enough to accuse you of any of the acts contained in verse 19 or 21, it is evident that you have indulged in at least 5 or more of those behaviors in verse 20.

Ma’am, because I am unable to come to you in a private setting to express my concern about your spiritual state, I have no choice but to bring such behavior to the attention of “the church” (all brothers and sisters in Christ) and have them see whether or not the charge I bring against your behavior is grounds for church discipline if you choose to continue on your way in these behaviors.

As I said before, YOU are the one who brought your Christian standing into this discussion. If you are going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk or risk being called a hypocrite. You need to think long and hard about what you are feeling, and the way you are behaving, if you have any hope of people seeing Christ through your example.

At this point, I have to call “bullshit” to your profession of faith in God, and your claim to be a Christian. You cannot have it both ways, Sybrina. Either you are, evidenced by more than just lip service, or you aren’t, evidenced by your behavior.
Pick a side and get on it. I would suggest that peace about this would more readily come to you if you confess your error and ask forgiveness first from the Lord, and then from those in the faith who are affected by your highly public claims to be something that so far, you have not shown any evidence of truly being. Please note that at any time you are free to repent of your error and go in a direction that is more in keeping with the walk of the One you claim to be following.

Finally, I would like to ask you why you felt the need to make this statement:

“They’ve killed my son.”

To my knowledge….to everyone’s knowledge…this death of your son was not a group effort by 2 or more people. Only one man was involved in this incident. Could you possibly tell me what you meant by using the word “They”? Certainly you didn’t really believe that more than one person was responsible for the death of your son? Or do you?
